Young Portuguese tenor Luis Gomes has already made an impact at the UK operatic scene, described as “a star in the making” and “destined for a glittering future”.
As a Jette Parker Young Artist at the Royal Opera House (ROH), he has sang the roles of Le Chevalier Les dialogues des Carmelites, Pong Turandot, Gastone La Traviata, Lampionnaio Manon Lescaut, 4th Esquire Parsifal and Nemorino (understudy) Elisir d'Amore, alongside the most famous opera stars and under the direction of renowned conductors such as Sir Antonio Pappano and Sir Simon Rattle.
In June 2015 Luis makes his debut as Fenton in Falstaff becoming the first Portuguese singer to perform a lead role on the Royal Opera House stage.
Luis is also in demand as a concert and recital soloist at prestigious international venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Barbican Hall, DeDoelen Rotterdam, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, St. Cecilia Rome and Gulbenkian Foundation Concert Hall Lisbon.
His concert repertoire includes Rossini's Pettie Messe Solennelle, Gounod's St Cecilia Mass, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, J.S. Bach’s St John’s passion (Arias), Mozart’s Mass in Cmin and Requiem, Verdi Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation, Schubert’s Mass in Eb and Intende Voci.
Further Operatic experience includes, Nemorino Elisir d’amore, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni and Fenton Falstaff at the Teatro Verdi Trieste, Rodolfo La Boheme at Verbier Festival academy, Tottono I Gioielli della Madonna, Pinkerton Madama Butterfly (cover) at Opera Holland Park, Beppe Rita, Fenton Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, George Our Town at Silk theatre (GSMD), Snout A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Barbican theatre and Jenik The Bartered Bride for British Youth Opera at the Peacock Sadler’s Wells theatre for which he was awarded the Basil A Turner Prize. Luis has also won the Bruce Miller/Gulliver Prize in 2013.
In August 2009 Luis sang to more than 30 000 people at the biggest Opera Gala ever to take place in Portugal - Festival de Música do Avante with Ginásio Opera Orchestra, under the direction of Kodo Yamagishi.
Before joining the JPYAP at the ROH Luis studied at the National Opera Studio and Guildhall School of Music & Drama where he graduated (BMus and MMus in Performance) with distinction under the tuition of Rudolf Piernay.
Luis is proudly a Samling Artist since November 2012 and a Georg Solti Accademia di Belcanto Scholar where he attended master classes with Richard Bonynge, Dennis O'Neill and Angela Gheorghiu.
Future plans include, Tebaldo Capuleti e I Montecchi for Buxton Opera Festival, Edmondo Manon Lescaut at the Royal Opera House and Rodolfo La Boheme for Scottish Opera.
